IXORA: Inspiring Xingnanians with Opportunities to be Responsible individuals and Advocates for Sustainable Living

Growing Future-Ready Changemakers and Developing Future-Ready Xingnanians
At Xingnan Primary School, we believe that every child can make a positive difference to the world around them. Through our Applied Learning Programme (ALP), IXORA, we nurture students to become environmentally responsible individuals and advocates of sustainable living. Anchored on sustainability and the development of 21st Century Competencies (21CC), IXORA provides authentic, hands-on learning experiences that empower students to understand real-world environmental issues, design innovative solutions and inspire others to take action.
IXORA goes beyond environmental education. It provides meaningful opportunities for students to develop essential 21CC, including:
Communication
Civic literacy
Adaptive thinking
Inventive thinking
By engaging students in authentic learning experiences and empowering them to take action, IXORA nurtures compassionate leaders who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to contribute positively to their communities and the world. At Xingnan Primary School, we believe that every small action matters. Through IXORA, our students learn not only to care for the environment but also to become thoughtful problem-solvers and confident changemakers who will help build a more sustainable future for all.
Our IXORA Approach
IXORA adopts the unique 3A Approach incorporating design-thinking which encourages students to think critically, collaborate effectively and develop creative solutions for a sustainable future.

🌱 Awareness
Students develop an understanding of important sustainability issues such as food security, climate change, recycling and renewable energy.
🌿 Application
Students apply their learning through meaningful experiences, including planting, composting, recycling, design thinking and creating prototypes to solve environmental challenges.
🌏Advocacy
Students share their knowledge and ideas with their peers, families and the community, encouraging sustainable practices and inspiring positive change.
The IXORA Learning Journey
Every Xingnanian embarks on a six-year sustainability journey, with age-appropriate learning experiences that progressively deepen their understanding and strengthen their ability to make an impact.
Primary 1 – Farmtastic Beginnings
Students discover the importance of food security and learn how food is grown. They gain hands-on experience in planting and share their learning with family and friends, nurturing an appreciation for nature and sustainable living.
Primary 2 – Reducing Food Waste
Students learn the importance of minimising food wastage and explore responsible consumption through initiatives such as the Clean Plate Campaign. They advocate for food conservation by creating posters, dioramas and jingles to promote awareness.
Primary 3 – Eco Carnival
Students explore food sustainability and high-tech farming through authentic learning experiences and learning journeys. They design interactive booths and share their knowledge with their peers during the school's Eco Carnival.
Primary 4 – Eco Avengers
Students deepen their understanding of recycling and responsible waste management. They learn to recycle correctly and become ambassadors for sustainable practices within the school community.
Primary 5 – Future Movers
Students investigate climate change and renewable energy. Using design thinking, they create innovative prototypes of transport systems that address environmental challenges and present their ideas to their peers.
Primary 6 – Future Cities
Students explore sustainable urban development and climate-resilient city planning. They design and showcase model cities that integrate sustainable building concepts and innovative solutions for future living.
Student Leadership through IXORA Club
To further nurture our environmental stewardship, Xingnan Primary School provides opportunities for students (Primary 3-6) to serve as Eco Representatives (ALP-Tier 1B) through the IXORA Club.
These Eco Representatives play an important role in promoting sustainable habits across the school. They will:
Lead classroom housekeeping and environmental initiatives
Encourage energy-saving practices
Manage classroom recycling corners
Promote proper waste segregation
Support school-wide recycling efforts through the "Trash for Treasure" programme
Through specialised training and enrichment activities, Eco Representatives develop leadership qualities while inspiring their classmates to care for the environment. Students who exhibit a strong passion will advance to ALP-Tier 2 which is designed to provide students with progressive, experiential learning opportunities that combine sustainability education with practical applications. Few with exceptional leadership qualities may be appointed as Deputy Chief or Chief Eco Leader, equivalent to our Vice-Head Prefect appointment. We hope they will continue to inspire, champion and advocate for sustainable living as they move on to secondary and tertiary education.
