The Mother Tongue Language department at Xingnan Primary School is committed to nurturing students who take joy in learning their mother tongue. We believe that language is more than a means of communication — it is a bridge to our heritage and a window to the world. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, we inspire students to embrace their mother tongue with confidence and pride.
Key Approaches
We adopt a learner-centred approach that makes language learning relevant, enjoyable, and meaningful. Teachers use a variety of strategies including storytelling, drama, and collaborative activities to engage students in authentic language use. To cater to diverse learning needs, differentiated instruction is employed to support both students who need additional guidance and those who are ready for greater challenges. Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to use their mother tongue in everyday interactions, reinforcing their language skills in real-world contexts. We also encourage our teachers to integrate technology into their lessons, both to enhance student engagement and to design learning experiences that are tailored to the varying abilities of their students, ensuring that every child is supported in achieving the intended learning outcomes.
Mother Tongue eXcite Week
MT eXcite Week is a highlight of our Mother Tongue calendar, where students engage in a variety of fun and interactive activities designed to spark curiosity and deepen their interest in language learning.
Mother Tongue Fortnight (MTFN)
Mother Tongue Fortnight (MTFN) offers students a rich cultural immersion experience, where they explore the traditions, customs, and stories of the Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities, connecting language learning to living culture. Students are also given platforms to showcase their language abilities through competitions and performances, including recitation and performance competitions in different languages.
Higher Mother Tongue programme (P3–P6)
For students who demonstrate greater aptitude and passion for the language, the Higher Mother Tongue programme (P3–P6) provides an enriched curriculum that strengthens language proficiency and nurtures a love for reading.
Mother Tongue Support Programme (MTSP)
To ensure that no student is left behind, the Mother Tongue Support Programme (MTSP) provides targeted support for students who need additional help in their language learning journey.
